The instruments were purchased from from Hawkes & Co. of London at a total cost of £80, the brass instruments cost £60 and £20 for drums. Funds had been raised through subscriptions, donations plus a grant of £25 from the Urban District Council.
Members were taught to play by T. Glennon of Nuns Island, and the band made its first outing with the new instruments in the summer. In November of that year the Band held a concert in The Town Hall in order to raise the princely sum of £50 for new uniforms.
While the concert was considered a great success, it only managed to raise £25 towards the total cost of the uniforms and so it was subsequently decided to hold a second concert to raise the balance.
A newly equipped and uniformed St. Patrick's Brass and reed band took part in the St.Patrick's parade the following year and all the local papers applauded their achievements.
