2002 marks the 75th anniversary Galway's first outside radio broadcast

November 17th 1927, people all over Ireland, England and continental Europe, gathered around wireless sets to listen to Galway's first live outside radio broadcast. The concert, in aid of the National Relief Fund for the Cleggan Disaster, was broadcast from the Empire Theatre in the centre of Galway.

Conducted by the Bandmaster Mr. Paddy Griffin, St. Patrick's Band began playing the 'Stars and Stripes' by John Philip Sousa at 9 p.m. While it had been arranged at quite short notice, under the Musical Directorship of Miss May Fogarty and the cooperation of St. Patrick's Band and the Empire Theatre Orchestra it was deemed a great success.

The concert was held under the auspices of Galway Chamber of Commerce who in turn persuaded the new Radio Station "2RN", which had been set up in Dublin the year before to broadcast live from Galway.
